“Happy Martin Luther King Jr. day mom!” says kid#2

“And to you too love. Who was Martin Luther King Jr.?”. says me.

“He was a famous African American who brought peace to America”, says kid#2

“I see! What does it mean to be African American?”, says me.

Shrugs kid#2, “I dunno, to have brown skin, like you mama“, she says.

Little kids don’t see skin colour as a defining characteristic of a person. My daughter has kids of all races, religions, colours in her class.. but if I ask  her to identify who is an African American, she would have no idea. It is nice to hold on to this innocence… where people are just people.

Happy MLK day to  you. May his dream be a reality in our lifetime.

Love it. Lauren told me that African Americans had to ride at the back of the bus but how would that work because then Miss J (the bus driver Lauren adores) couldn’t drive the bus? Lauren just cannot fathom racism. Her very best friends are of all different races. And, of course, her sister is Mayan. I love that.

Love the innocence. Before the world interferes… Happy MLK day to you too!
